The Brief to which we were working to targeted towards 16- 24 year old's which was our target audience we had to produced a opening sequence to a British Social Realism film - working for Film 4. Our opening sequence had to be entirely original and we to keep the brief at all times. Due to the fact that this was a, British Social realism film the budget for the film was low meaning we had to think about the locations and cast for our opening sequence The title of Rianne and I's opening sequence is 'Suffocation' we believe that the tittle clearly connotes the themes which would occur in our film which is isolation, loneliness domestic violence and alcohol. the Husband feels suffocated din his everyday life and despite the fact he quite respectable the hassles of daily life lead him into committing adultery and domestic violence, his wife on the other hand is oppressed by his violence and alcohol addiction but she still tries to play a good wife to him. producing the opening sequence Rianne and i think we have defiantly kept to our Treatment which refers to the fact that we kept to the themes of domestic violence, isolation and loneliness.
These themes are related to the primary audience research which we conducted. Also the treatment shows how we kept the target audience in mind at all times whilst producing our opening sequence. Rianne and i decided to use a focus group as it gave us a wider range of qualitative answers which were very useful in the production of out opening sequence. the focus group consisted of teenagers aged 16-19, these are ages well into our target audience and give us a very clear insight to what teenagers thought in general about a BSR film and how they liked our ideas. Here as you can see the focus group responded positively to the themes within our opening sequence. Click here to see the response we got from our focus group. I think that our opening sequence closely reflates to the Film 4 BSR film 'Looking For Eric' Not so much the locations and cast but the themes involved. Eric is a man suffering from loneliness and isolation he is fed up of his everyday boring life. Which closely coincides with the themes within our opening sequence. Also he is struggling to meet the demands of his Family and clearly portrays the theme of dysfunctional families i think that the fact that our character abuses his wife- even though this is not shown very subtly in the opening sequence it shows a dysfunctional family which is a major theme incorporated into British Social Realism films, it shows the reality of everyday life and the hardships many people actually have to go though.
Eric Failing to keep up with life.
Our main actor (Adam) failing to keep up with life.
Also i think that the music from the opening sequence of 'This Is England' has inspired the music in ours. The fact the beat of the music cuts to when an important shot is taking place and because we have no dialogue in the opening sequence we had to make sure that the music itself told a story just the like the background music from This Is England, again which is a film 4 film. BSR films tend to have a lot of ambiguity in the opening sequences which is an important convention in BSR films and i think Rianne and i conformed to that well.
This was the final week to complete the opening sequence and our editing had to be completed by Thursday the 18th of April. As we were sharing the Mac with another pair we had to compromise on the timings we both shared the Mac. Rianne and i spent lunches editing our work. We think it has come together very nicely as we also put in the credits. We edited the opening sequence in I movie and created the credits on Live type. We firstly imported all of our clips and had to watch all the clips to find the best clips which the camera reflected all the themes of a British Social Realism opening sequence. We then had to make sure the continuity of the opening sequence was correct and made sure this was the only editing that was used as BSR films do not include and CGI effects. The filming was done in a real life setting this also denotes the themes of a BSR film.
During the middle of the week we found we had to change the music which played in the background of our opening sequence as it did not connote an opening sequence and did not correctly establish the mood and themes of the BSR opening sequence which we were trying to put across. Faiz Pokun composed a new sound track for our opening sequence. We did not need his permission again as Rianne and I were using music he made previously for our opening sequence but made sure that we included his name on our credits in order to credit him. This is the new track that we had composed for our opening sequence. I feel it creates tension and enigma and really grabs the attention of our audience due to the build up of it. We feel this music really is perfect for our opening sequence.
We used three programs to complete the production of our opening sequence. Firstly created our graphics in Live Type we then edited our opening sequence in I movie and inserted the graphics in live type on top of our sequence this shows that we are able to use a viarty of new media technology to produce our opening seuqnce. Then lastly we inserted all of our graphics and our opening sequence into Final cut where out opening sequence came together. This is our full opening sequence. We have posted it on youtube to recive an audeince feedback, this is a way which we have used new media technology to promote our opening sequence to the general public as anyone is able to view our BSR opening sequence.
This week was the final week we had available to use our actors to complete the filming necessary for our BSR opening sequence. Rianne and I went into school with our actors to shoot the last parts of the opening sequence we also were able to use my dads car to film a vital part of the opening sequence. The scene involving the car was inspired by another film i came across which i watched in the Easter half term. It is called Talaash- a Bollywood film which inspired Rianne and I's production, we feel as if this scene really reflects our theme of prostitution, adultery and loneliness within our opening sequence which are typical themes of BSR films. This is the short scene from the film which we used in our opening sequence.
Rianne and i found this half term in which we were able to refilm very suefull as it gave us an opputinity to further imporve and perfect our shots and it was also easy for the actors involved ad they had free time. It aslo helped that the shooting locatiobs were nto far and not many travel arrangements had to be made and we spent alot of the reshsooting many of our shots due to our feedbak. However we were not able to complete some of the shots as exactly as we thought out due to lighting and timing due to the fact we mostly needed the dark and one of the actors was not able to stay too late to film whichy ment we had to comprimise on some of our shots.
The main aim of this week was to try and film the parts of our production which needed to be re filmed due to the feedback we were given Rianne and i found it very useful to be able to film the this half term as it gave us flexibly and also for our actors. we were able to make adjustments and were able to shoot all scene to perfection to make sure the scenes flowed and we make the correct adjustments from the feedback we were given. A lot of our opening sequence had to be filmed again due to the lighting in our opening sequence. Rianne and i made sure we paid attention to detail so the lighting all shots remained constant and for the time pass we were showing the lighting had to make scene for example we had to wait till the sun set in order to shoot the scene where the husband comes home and we had to wait till dusk to shoot the scene where the husband leaves work. We found the feedback that was given to use very useful as we are now able to re films parts that our audience did not like or understand and make it more to their liking this also helped us as we were able to identify the mistakes we made in filming, as we included too much for an opening sequence which is not conventional for a British Social Realism opening sequence. The decisions that me and Rianne made were to cut out the parts which did not create enough meaning and change some scenes to fit the conventions of a British Social Realism film as the conventions of a BSR opening sequence is to create enigma and mystery, we felt as if too much information was given away to the audience..
