Film 4 Ideology
Looking For Eric
Looking for Eric matches Film 4 ideology and style very well as this film shows the hardships of life and is very realistic, it shows troubles of a schizophrenic character who is is working class and struggling everyday life. Film 4 usually uses real life location and the representation of the location used in this film is small town in England and mainly shot in a house which is run down, this denotes film 4's style of shooting and showing the harsh reality of life. There are a lot of British cultural references due to the accent of the main character and many people outside of England would not be able to understand his accent and there for would not be included as the target audience and he is shown as working for the Royal mail which is a British company. This film holds a very typical Film 4 story line and shows the hash reality of everyday life and holds a very ambiguous story line, in addition to this the main character has schizophrenia which is an issue not normally dealt within a Hollywood narrative and does not provide the audience with any escapist elements.
Submarine
Submarine falls under the Film 4 style and ideology well as it portrays the reality of a working class boy in a high school dealing with issues that a normal everyday high school boy deals with. The camera work is very simple and mainly only mid shot and long shots are used . The characters in this film are represented very realistically and not shown as Hollywood starts, the two main characters are unknown actors who are portrayed as loosers in the film. The location used in submarine goes with the Film 4 ideology by using real life locations, again many scenes are shot in a house in England, very different from a Hollywood story line where the films are shot in exotic locations The British cultural references of submarine are the school uniform which the two main characters are wearing, this may alienate other audiences such as in America as no school uniform is worn. This is a typical film 4 story line as it shows failure and the hash reality of the life of an unpopular high school boy and the story line can be seen as sad. For a teenage audience this film has no escapist elements as these kind of issues are dealt with in everyday life in high school.
Four Lions
Four lions is a film based on a group of Muslim terrorists and show their journey, The representation of the characters fall under the film 4 ideology as it used unknown actors playing very graphic roles very unlike Hollywood, film 4 films and took a large risk whilst making this film as the shows the hardships of life in a very extreme way. The representation of location fits with the style of film 4 as the film is all shot in local locations with rough editing work such as shaking of the camera and hand held shots this is reflecting the film 4 ideology. There are many British cultural references in this film, the accents of all the characters are only familiar to British people also the music which was playing at the end of the trailer is a very well known British song and associated with many British things. Another British cultural reference is the location and this is shown whilst the characters are driving down the mortar way, the location may only be familiar to people living in England. This film falls under the Film 4 story line as it portrays a very sensitive and controversial issue which may offend many people and the characters in this film are shown as losers and underclass as they are terrorists are not accepted in social norms.
