2. Poverty
The key theme in this clip is poverty, we can see the harsh and real conditions that some people live in Britain. British Social Realist films express the unknown working class homes and where they live. We are able to see the mess and how un-organised the flat that they live in is and also the surrounding. We can also see that they are living in poverty by the clothes she is wearing it is very simple and connotes the fact that she is not like many teenage girls who care what they wear and try to keep up to the latest trends. The sequence portrays the theme using the mise-en-scene for example the colour design which is very bleak and plain representing their mundane lives which they cannot get out of, this constant cycle which they are stuck in and cannot get out of due to their money situation. Poverty highlights the British Social Realism theme due to the fact it shows how some people love. I think I would use this theme of poverty as it shows the harsh reality of the struggles of people in Britain.
3. Race
British Social Realist films use Race as a very common theme due to the fact it portrays the inequalities which certain people fact in Britain, this theme is not used commonly now due to the fact that Britan is a multicultural country however previously this theme has been among the most common theme which has been used. East is east is an excellent example to portray the difficulties of Asians living in Britan and the struggle they went through and not being able to fit in with the British Culture. An example of this is when one of the sons go into a disco dressed in a suit and feels very uncomfortable despite the fact he is young and it is his age to be enjoying parties. Another example is when the young boy runs into the room and says "The pakis are here" this clearly denotes the fact that young people did not have any respect for people of any cultures in this era. The sequence clearly portrays the theme through the dialogue used and we are able to see there is tension between the clashes of culture and how they do not work together, how the father wants something different but the children rebel due to the fact they have grown up in Britan and have differing views. I may use this them as it is a very strong theme and deals with the reality that many people went threw.
4. Relationships
Nowhere boy is a British Social Realism Film which highlights a major theme of Relationships British Social Realism Films deal with various relationships, here the theme of relationships is established by the fact that we are able to see the main character is looking for his mother, whilst his aunt is protecting him, dealing with friends but he also finds a girlfriend .
The theme is established firstly when when the main characters aunt says "She will hurt you" this reflects the fact of how real people deal with situations such as loosing their parents and the emotional journey that people have to go through. Another example of Relationships is the bond that the main character has with his best friend and the fact how some friends are for life and that friends are the main source of support in today's world. The theme is portrayed through the camera work and dialogue portraying the distance of the characters. I think this is a very strong theme to use in my work as it connotes the reality of how importance of the different type of relationships in a persons life.
5. Disabilities/ Abnormalities
This theme is clearly shown in the British Social Realist film 'Looking For Eric' The main character is a schizophrenic man who aspires to be just like his favorite football player but cannot get out of his mundane boring everyday life due to the fact he is schizophrenic. British Social Realist films deal with sensitive topics like this to portray the reality and struggles of people who suffer from abnormalities and how they have to deal with it in the real world. The theme is established by the fact he has hallucinations of talking to his favorite football player throughout the film. He talks to his favorite football player throughout the film who acts like the main characters super ego, guiding him along the correct path. Independent films are aimed to a niche audience who are highly educated and able to understand and sympathize with this sensitive issue. the theme is portrayed in a very obvious and unambiguous way showing the real issues that many people with abnormalities suffer from and how they lead their life in Britan If i were to explore this theme within my work i would have to think of a very intriguing and sensitive story line that would draw in attention to the audience however this may be difficult as portraying abnormalities is a sensitive issue.
