This week was a very productive week in terms of starting to think about my target audience and a brief idea of what our idea of the opening might be. I have learnt that i am going to be making a British Social Realism film for the ages of 16-24 meaning that the themes must interest this age range and also should be relate-able in order to interest them. Rianne who is my partner in this production concluded that we want to carry out a focus group in order to gain a more wide and detailed response to gain insight to what this target group wants. We asked a series of questions and showed stimulus to our target group and videoed their response. We also put together a table to show the themes which came up in each trailer we showed so the audience in our focus group could identify and spot out which themes interested them as they have most likely have no idea what a British Social Realism Film is. Here is the table which we put together to show our audience.
We chose trailers of British Social Realism for the stimulus of this task as we thought it would be most suitable to show the themes and ideologies which come up in British Social Realism films, also as out audience have not seen many British Social Realism films we thought trailers would be the best way to familiarize the audience which a British Social Realism film. We used a range of trailers to over view British Social Realism and trailers which contained a variety of themes.
From the response from our focus group i have concluded that our target audience is more into the gang culture however some also prefer some romance and comedy the themes which are preferred. Most of these themes do not really link together however they were very interested in the brief story line which was based on our idea for this production they also gave feedback to further expand the idea and gave points on what would interest them. The institutions involved in British Social Realist films are usually independent company's such as Film 4who produce, distribute and exhibit the film also their ideology
is to portray the real life mundane realism that goes on in everyday life, also the camera work and editing of British Social Realism films reflects that they are priced by independent company's as the camera work is fairly simple and also the settings and locations do not look expensive as they are showing working class people and this highlights the fact that interdependent company's do not have the money for expensive locations or have cranes available for establishing shots. This means that we will use real life locations such as our own homes or parks in areas such as barking due to the fact it shows a working class location which is and where we would be able to get to easily and film.
