Part 8 Evaluation

I found that creating our preliminary task largely influenced the production as a whole as we had more confidence in using all the technology it prepared us for the editing skills, camera work, planning and time management skills which we needed for all stages of our production work when creating our opening sequence.

What was successful
What was unsuccessful
How I developed these skills in the main coursework.
Research & Planning
I Think due to the fact I have already planned out work on story boards before I did not have much difficulty and completed all the planning work on time. The research consisted of exploring different shot types and studying the camera language and what creates verisimilitude within in a piece of work. (Link the work)
Drawing the story boards was defiantly my weak point as I do not think that it contained enough details and represented exactly what we wanted to show. I think that drawing story boards is also unnecessary and time consuming due to the fact my drawing skills isn’t good meaning the story boards would not be informative enough. Also there was no set target audience which w
e were working to so our piece of work did not appeal to a certain age range.

From drawing story boards I was able to go on to making a shooting script  I think that the shooting script is much more effective and detailed and also shows the audience and cast exactly what the directors tend to do. I also improved in time management skills as we created a production schedule that let us plan out and meet deadlines. I think in the research aspect in the main coursework I was more focused onto really achieving what the target audience wanted to see so we carried out a focus group which meant we had in depth reach into what the target audience wanted. We also studied the themes and conventions of British Social Realism so we had more knowledge on what to include in the opening sequence. I think that for next yera i would like to use a more extensive range of planning prodcuts enabling me to keep more on time and infrom the cast more ablout what we are doing.
Creativity
I think that despite the breif of our preliminary task being quite vague we put a good twist into the piece of work as the main idea was to create a piece of work demonstrating continuity editing about a interrogation scene. As a group we decided to create a police integration scene but create flash backs into the crime the criminals committed. I think this was an exciting idea and also gave us a lot to work with and were not limited for ideas.
Due to the fact we did not have a large time scale to complete this task the locations which we used were note exactly how we wanted and also due to the fact it the breif was not detailed enough : “ Continuity editing must show a character opening a door and crosses a room where they sit down and exchange a few lines of dialogue” Also as the length of this work was only allowed to be about a minute long I think we struggled as a group to come up with the few lines of dialogue for our complicated narrative.
Due to the brief being more specific in terms of the target audience and genre we were able to work within the lines and create something that the audience would like also due to the fact we had lots of knowledge into the themes and conventions of British Social Realism we were able to make more in depth decisions and that every decision we made meant something to the audience and from there we were able to expand on all of our ideas and create a piece of unique work. Also the fact that we knew the type of BSR films that already existed we were able to subvert from those themes and create something different. For example we used more of a middle class status rather than working class to demonstrate the themes in our opening sequence. I think for next year i will explore more into the theme of the work i have givven and make somthign very unsual but still keeping to the conventions of the Genre we have bene givven.
Digital Technology
I think that due to the fact it was the fist time we used the new HD cameras we were able to work out quickly how to use the product and also
The fact we used the I Mac to upload and edit our work. I think I have made a huge improvement on the use of using cameras and the I Mac.
At the beginning I think using the I Mac was slightly challenging for me due to the fact I haven’t really used it before and it was important that I learnt how to use the I Mac due to the fact it was a major part in the post production.
I am not able to use the I Mac without any challenges and have learnt how to use many different types of soft where also though the production of our main coursework we were given a different type of Hd camera and I have also learnt how to do a focus pull and export/import many products onto the Mac without any difficulty. Next year i would like to explore more soft where programs on the mac.
Post production
Using I movie whilst editing the preliminary task, this was the fist time when using this software I think that despite this being the first time I was able to create continuity very well and kept to the brief well

I think that when using I movie I realized that many of the inbuilt effects do not a very realistic effect and seemed very cartoonist and that “flash back” effect which we were trying to portray did not look very believable.
I movie was not the only soft where I use din post production; I also used live type and final cut. These 3 programs are what helped construct our work. I lent how to use live type h=which created our credits and also by using I movie we used transitions that created meaning: for example using simple cross dissolves that represent the passing of time. Next year i defiantly need more practice on final cut as it was very time consuming and frustrating to work with.

Here is the Preliminary Task task compared to our opening sequence:
