Production Log 6

This week in Mr Phillipson's lesson i have learnt the differences between stories which is the events in the order of they occur, plot, which is the order in which it is told to the audience and Narrative which about the structure of the text and also how important it is to every film and that every story follows the Todorov's theory which is that: The fictional Environment begins with a stare of equilibrium where everything is normal as it should be then the characters suffer some disruption and then the new equilibrium is produced at the end of the narrative. There are five stages the narrative can progress through..

  • A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)
  • A disruption of that order by an event
  • A recognition that the disorder has occurred
  • A Repair of the damage of the disruption
  • A new equilibrium, a new order has been resorted
I have learnt that there are two types of characters which must appear in our production, An antagonist and a protagonist  The antagonist is usually the character that causes the disruption of the film and the Protagonist is the "good guy" who makes the situation better. For example in the film Batman the Protagonist is Batman who tries to solve all the problems but the antagonist is the joker who causes the disruption in the film.
I have also learnt that there are different types of Narrative such as Linear or non linear. That if the story is linear it will be in the correct order but if the film is Non linear the film will contain flash backs. An example of a film which is non linear is Slumdog Millionaire as there are many flash backs and flash forwards during the whole film.
Also narrative is conveyed to the audience in different ways such as in an omniscient way where we are able to see the story based from one or more characters and the audience may more more information than the characters or a film can have a restricted narrative where the whole film is based though one characters and what is seen through their eyes.
What have been the key issues for your production this week?
The key issues for the production this week have been discussing the whole narrative of our film and if we were to create the whole film what would be the story line and what characters it would involve, the aim of doing this is to make sure we do not well the whole story in our opening sequence as this does not create enigma and the main convention of a British Social Realism film opening is that they create mystery and leave the audience to ask questions of what is to come next. We did not have much trouble in create a whole narrative for out film as Rianne and i had pre-planned the story line already. However we had to make sure that all the correct conventions of a British Social Realism was included in our film. What decisions have you made about the issues and why? We decided that our Narrative will follow a linear story line as this is conventional of British Social Realism Films as they like to show the mundane realism of everyday life and how real people suffer daily, using flashbacks is slightly unrealistic. We also decided that we are going to show our narrative in an omniscient way as our film is based on domestic violence and we would like to show how different characters deal with this sensitive topic.
